Curriculum> Assessment

Assessment is the means by which teachers and administrators gather information about how well students are learning and how well school programs are helping students learn. In WSESU we assess to determine whether or not students are achieving the standards identified in the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities and the WSESU Learning Framework. We can identify three major categories of assessment:

  1. Classroom Assessment - where the teacher in a given classroom uses a variety of tests, quizzes, assignments, products and performances to determine student achievement of standards identified by the teacher.
  2. Local (district-wide) Assessment - where teachers across WSESU administer the same assessment in a standardized way. This enables teachers and administrators to examine the quality of instructional programs throughout WSESU. The assessment is often in the form of a test but can also include a collection of student work. Writing and Math portfolios are examples of this latter form of local assessment.
  3. Large-scale (statewide, national, international) Assessment - where virtually all students at a given grade level at the state level are given the same standardized assessment. Examples of current statewide assessments are the New Stadards Reference Examination (NSRE) in Mathematics and Language Arts (given at 4th, 8th, and 10th grade) and the Vermont PASS science assessment (given at 5th, 9th and 11th grade).

Data on both Local and Large-scale assessments of WSESU students are available at the Vermont School Reports site.

WSESU Assessment Blueprint

The Blueprint is the protocol upon which assessment in WSESU will be planned and implemented. For specific points and guidelines, see the WSESU Assessment Plan and the Assessment Section of the WSESU Learning Framework

Please note:

  • Schools are free to augment this plan with other assessments, e.g., norm-referenced tests, at selected grade levels.
  • WSESU-wide work will focus on developing Performance-Based Learning (PBL) Tasks linked to standards and classroom instruction, which prepare students for the state assessments.
  • Listening/ speaking and Technology Assessments will be embedded in Performance-Based Learning Tasks k-12
  • Social Development, Art, Physical Education and Health Education Assessment will be developed in the future.
